Custom Quilters does not charge you extra to use your own batting or backing. However, some materials may not be suitable for machine quilting, see belowSAVE money, FUSABLE batting is not preferred for longarm quilting.

The backing and batting needs to be EIGHT inches wider and longer to accommodate loading it onto the machine.  If your quilt top is 60” by 80”, the backing and batting need to be 68” by 88”. When calculating batting add 8 inches to your quilt. Using the example. Since the batting comes in 96", take the shortest side 60", add 8" to
calculate 68" of batting

Batting

Battings have recommended quilt stitch spacing. Please choose the appropriate batting for the size and type of your selected design.

If you have a batting that you would like Custom Quilters to purchase, please email us the brand, and product information. We will review for suitability with our system, availability and pricing.

We carry battings that have been tested with excellent results.

Bamboo

The bamboo content in this batting provides a softer product than an all cotton batting. Bamboo owns a unique anti-bacterial ability. Notable of bamboo fiber is its unusual ability to breathe and its coolness. It has good moisture absorption and ventilation making garments cool. When combined with natural cotton, bamboo softens the batting and will create a comfortable quilt.

Soy Blend

The combination of Soy & Cotton is softer than anything on the market today. The strength of the soy protein fiber is stronger than all other natural fibers and second only in strength to Polyester. Therefore the combination of the scrim binder and the soy & cotton fibers makes for an extremely durable batting. Space between stitches can be as much as 8” to 10”.

Fire Retardant Rayon

FR rayon is permanently fire resistant, exhibits low smoke [& non -toxic gas] emission, with no melting [no burning drops]. Rayon is breathable making it a pleasure to wear in garment and to sleep beneath. It retains warmth, perfect for those seeking a warm quilt to sleep under. The ULTRA soft loft of this fiber has created the ultimate baby quilt batting.

80/20 Blend

80% Cotton & 20% Polyester with scrim binder is a soft, durable and substantial batting created for quilters who want cotton in their projects but also want wash-ability as well as good definition in the quilting stitches. 80/20 has a soft loft that is highly valued among quilters. It will not stretch and distort.

100% Polyester

Siliconized Polyester for softness. Polyester does not breathe like many natural fibers and therefore could make a very warm bed covering as it traps body warmth. It provides a good deal of loft. It is bonded to retard bearding [fiber migration to the surface] and will not shrink. However, should you use hot temperatures while washing and drying a quilt or garment, the fabrics could shrink 3% if they are not shrunk prior to use. Excessive laundering can create bearding.

Wool

Super soft wool. If a sleeping quilt is your goal, super soft washed wool is the answer. It breathes naturally and allows air to pass through, making an excellent summer quilt. Wool has qualities that also keep us warm in the winter. The light weight offers comfort as it does not weigh you down. Stitch areas up to 4” apart on any project. There is little to no resistance and the lofty nature of super washed wool shows an amazing definition in the stitches. When you really want to show your quilting workmanship, this is the one to use. It is bonded to retard bearding [fiber migration to the surface] and should not shrink.

CARE

Should you use hot temperatures while washing and/or drying a quilt or garment, the fabrics used could shrink 3% to 5%, if they are not shrunk prior to use. Excessive laundering can cause some fiber migration [bearding] on dark fabrics so gentle wash and little time in the dryer is recommend. Hot temperatures in wash and dry are never recommended for any fiber. Air dry for best results.

Factors to consider:

Smooth look - polyester
Old fashioned look – 100% cotton
Is it for a child – Rayon fire retardant.
Will it be hung on a wall?  Use a batting that drapes well
Washed a lot – poly blend and heavier quilting
Light quilt or very thin – Bamboo/Cotton Blend, ultra thin polyester
Heavy quilt with loft – Polyester or wool with 1/4” Loft.
Need a warm quilt?  100 % Polyester or wool

Note: If providing batting, it must be quality.  Inferior batting can contain trash, which could result in damage to your quilt.  SAVE money, FUSABLE batting is not preferred for longarm quilting.
